     The Buckhannon Police Department recognizes the severe consequences of underage drinking. The department's goal is to educate young people about the dangers of underage drinking so they can make better decisions over the course of their lives. Studies have shown that if students are given the honest truths about drinking alcohol then they will make the right decisions.

B.A.S.I.C. Decisions

     B.A.S.I.C. Decisions is a movie about the dangers of underage drinking and its lifelong consequences.  The movie was filmed in its entirety in Buckhannon with help from many local citizens, and businesses. 

     The Buckhannon Police Department shows the movie to a variety of schools, youth groups and other community groups throughout the year. For more information about B.A.S.I.C.   • Student Drug Use - 62% have experimented with illegal drugs
  • Family History - 50% of students have a family history of alcohol abuse or drug dependency
  • Average age of first drink - 15 years old
    • 31% (100) drank by age 13
    • 92% (299) drank by age 17
    • 7% (24) drank by age 10
  • Average consumption - 10 beers (each time they drink)
  • Additional Facts
    • 80% (261) are considered problem drinkers
    • 20% (64) are considered late stage problem drinkers.
    • 95% (310) of students have not received any alcohol or drug                    counseling
    • 74% (240) have built up a drug or alcohol tolerance
    • Students have completed over 5,000 community service
      hours
  • Results of follow-up survey:
    • 19% No further alcohol consumption
    • 23% Less alcohol consumption than before the class
    • 10% Same (Unknown) alcohol consumption as before the class
    • 37% not surveyed
  • Completion - 86% of students successfully completed the B.A.S.I.C. program
